Electric Toothbrushes

I am not a "one size fits all" provider, and most recommendations in dentistry depend on the individual. However; a quality electric toothbrush is one thing I believe almost every patient would benefit from using.  Whether you have braces, gingivitis, periodontitis, bridges, implants, crowding, or if you simply want to maintain healthy tissues, consistent use with the correct technique will prove beneficial.

. If you are used to a manual toothbrush, switching to an electric toothbrush can feel different at first. When used correctly, it may feel like it “tickles” your gums. Starting with a gentle pressure and allowing time to adjust is key. I have seen patients go from moderate gingivitis to healthy gum tissue simply by making this one change.

Electric toothbrushes, especially sonic toothbrushes like Sonicare, use high-frequency vibrations to create rapid brush movements and fluid dynamics. This means the brush not only cleans the surface of the teeth, but also helps disrupt plaque slightly beyond where the bristles touch. This technology allows for a more consistent and effective clean compared to manual brushing for many patients. Another excellent option is a small, round brush head design like Oral-B (Braun). These brushes use an oscillating-rotating motion and the smaller head allows for more precise cleaning around each tooth. When used correctly, they can offer excellent plaque control and are a great alternative to sonic toothbrushes.

While there are many options available, you do not need the most expensive toothbrush to see results. Unless budget is not a concern and you prefer additional features or aesthetics, a mid-range electric toothbrush will be highly effective for most people.

Helpful Tip

Let the toothbrush do the work. Gently guide it along the gumline rather than scrubbing back and forth. If you are not reaching the gumline, even the best electric toothbrush will not be effective. Aim the bristles at a 45-degree angle toward the gumline to properly clean where plaque builds.

Replacement Toothbrush Heads

Note: Be sure to change your toothbrush head at least every 3 months. Please verify which model you have with the toothbrush replacement heads. Most Sonicare heads are compatible, but not all of them.
