Toothpaste

Toothpaste choices can feel overwhelming, but the goal is simple: choose a toothpaste with a remineralizing ingredient and use it consistently. There are so many great options to choose from today.

Toothpaste has become an increasingly debated topic in the oral health world, and it can quickly feel overwhelming trying to determine what is “best.” Research continues to evolve, especially surrounding ingredients, the oral microbiome, and remineralization. While there are strong opinions on both sides, my approach is to stay balanced, informed, and focused on what is both practical and clinically supportive.

Topical fluoride and hydroxyapatite are both re-mineralizing agents used most often in dentistry.  In my opinion, the most important factor is choosing a toothpaste is that it contains a re-mineralizing ingredient to help support and strengthen enamel, whether that is fluoride or hydroxyapatite. One of these two ingredients should be used daily.

Beyond that, I believe simpler ingredient lists are better when possible. I see many patients, myself included, experience irritation from ingredients such as SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate).  It may contribute to mouth irritation including sores and tissue sloughing for some individuals.

At the same time, it is important not to become consumed by fear or stress over every ingredient. I'm referring to  both sides of the debate.  Chronic stress itself negatively affects overall and oral health. Do your research, ask questions, then choose products that align with your personal needs, values, and stage of life.
